The one-stop guide for changing addresses

We wish we had a dollar for every time we hear about people forgetting to get utilities and services switched over when moving house. We’d have... well, quite a few dollars. Changing addresses with your utility and service providers is one of the most common things that gets put off until after moving day. However, leaving it until then can give you a headache and who needs one of those when moving house? Here’s a checklist to help you out.

The essentials before moving day

Electricity and gas

Although few people forget to get power connected at their new home and disconnected from their old home, one of the common problems that occurs is timing. You’ll want to be very specific with connection and disconnection times when you speak to your power provider to make sure you still have power when you’re moving out, and to ensure the power is already on when you arrive at your new address.

Telecommunications and internet

We have more smart technology in our homes than ever before and it’s all reliant on having an internet connection. Contact your telco as soon as you know your new address to make sure you’re connected by moving day.

Council and state government services

It pays to check with your council or state government to find out about water, waste water, rubbish and recycling. Find out who provides these services so you’re not left with a mess.

Home and contents insurance

If you’re getting or have a mortgage, having insurance will likely be one of the bank’s lending criteria. Don’t rely on it though. It’s better to be safe than sorry with what is likely your most valuable asset. This is a good time to see if your belongings are insured while in transit too. If you don’t have moving insurance, give us a call about it.

The post office

Again, get this done ahead of time to make sure your mail redirection has taken effect. There’s nothing more annoying than mail still going to your old address.

Your home security provider

If you have an alarm system for fire, smoke or burglary, make sure your security company has the system activated and ready by moving day.

The important list before you move

•    The ATO and any other national or state government agencies
•    Your employer
•    Your bank and credit card provider
•    Loan providers
•    Other financial agencies
•    Other insurance providers (health etc.)
•    Magazines and subscription services
•    Online shopping sites and accounts which use your address
•    Clubs and organisations
•    Your doctor, veterinarian and dentist
•    Schools
•    Friends and family

While this may look like a lot of work on top of organising your move, it’ll save you from problems like missing mail or moving into a dark house.

If you need any help with organising a move, give us a call. We’re happy to help.
