We’re a great nation of people who are confident to ‘do it yourself’ and that includes moving house. Okay, it’s a stressful time, but you can always call in a few mates, hire a truck and get it done. Too easy.

Or is it? There are many situations where you should consider getting professional help with moving. Here are a few examples.

Accidents and breakages

Professionals know how to pack your possessions, how to carry them safely and load them onto the truck in the best possible way. It greatly reduces the chances of breakages. Realistically, breakages do happen, even to the pros, as some incidents are beyond anyone’s control. This isn’t a worry if you’ve hired the pros, as you can get moving insurance to cover the cost of replacement. If you’re doing the moving yourself, you can’t get the same cover.

Moving large, heavy items

Many items don’t look like they would be hard to move, including those that aren’t too heavy. But lifting and carrying large or heavy items requires stamina, teamwork and practice. It isn’t the same as moving a sofa across a room. You’ll need to negotiate doors, hallways, stairs and other obstacles.

Items with unevenly distributed weight, such as pianos, gym equipment and most large pieces of furniture like freestanding wardrobes and bookcases are challenging to move from the house to the truck unless you have the right equipment and know what you’re doing.

It only takes one person to slip or lose their grip to have a costly accident. In these cases, there is also a significant risk of injury if the item lands on your leg or foot.

Insurance can cover the cost of replacing everyday items, but some items are irreplaceable, such as art, sculptures and antiques. It makes sense to have these items professionally packed and moved to virtually eliminate any chance of damage. In these cases, an ordinary moving box won’t do. Professionals have the knowledge, resources and experience to build a custom packaging solution to keep these items safe during the move.

With the pros, it is too easy

All you have to do when you hire the pros is open the door and let them do their work. Full service movers do everything, disassembling and reassembling, packing and unpacking, lifting, transport, storage and more. They can even organise cleaners at both ends.

While we think moving is simply a task involving packing, lifting and stacking our possessions onto a truck, knowing how to do each of these tasks safely and efficiently comes with experience and having the right tools for the job. Sometimes, you’re just better off leaving the job to someone else.
