Packing Tips & Hacks For When You’re Moving House

Packing Tips For Moving House

Moving house is one of the most time-consuming and stressful times in our lives.
To help you through this, we've compiled some of the most effective packing tips for moving house so that you'll have all your bases covered. While a moving company will take care of the heavy lifting and logistics of your move, you will still have a lot of packing to do. This is why a packing list template should be your best friend throughout the move period. Have it on your phone, so you can constantly update it and be informed about what is done and what is pending.

Use a Packing List Template

Using a packing list template will give you a list of all the things you need to complete so that every time you complete a task on the list, you can check it off and move to the next one until you are finished packing everything. Your packing list should have different categories, and this should help you to pack. You can then use the same list to unpack because you will know where everything is. Go through your hoiuse systematically and list everything in each room, ensuring to make a note of the fragile items - these will obviously need more care taken with them than other items. Go for eco-friendly storage boxes

Although this is very popular, you should avoid unrecyclable cardboard boxes when packing. An eco-friendly option is to go with either recyclable cardboard or sturdy plastic storage boxes instead - although plastic doesn't sound "eco-friendly", they can be used over and over again, whereas unrecylable cardboard can only be used a few times before they start falling apart. Using plastic storage boxes will ensure your items get to your destination in one piece. The plastics do not bend as boxes do. This means nothing will be squeezed in and destroyed. You can get these in different sizes for different items and label them so that it is easy to find everything as you are unpacking. Having labels will also help your moving company place each item in the rooms you specify.

Get In Touch With Utility Companies

As soon as you know your exact moving date, get in touch with your utility company. They will need your new home’s address and the date you want them to switch the connection. In Australia, you will have the option of picking between different utility providers or going with a specialist service provider who can offer all of these services in one package. Whatever option you chose initially is how you will go about this when moving. It is often easier if you selected a specialist service provider because your water and electricity will all be connected in one go. If you forget to switch your utilities, then you might find yourself in the dark for a few days, and you do not want that.

Make the Move Easier for Yourself and the Kids

Moving is hard not just physically, but emotionally as well. Maybe you have spent years in your current home, and there are fond memories that you are sad about leaving behind. Prepare for future moves by taking as many pictures as you can of your home and the special moments you had there with family and friends. If you are moving into a new home, then you can make the move easier by visualising yourself in your new home. Use photos of your new place to envision all the memories you will have there. Come up with a list of all the good things about your new home whether it is enough backyard space for a garden where you can grow organic produce or hold great barbecues. This is also a great way to get kids excited about moving house.

Get Rid of What You Do Not Need Before You Move

Moving is the perfect time to get rid of some of the stuff you might be hoarding. A few months before you are scheduled to move you should start sorting through your house and categorise everything based on what you will leave and what you will move with. This will drastically reduce the hassle and cost of moving. You can hold a yard sale and sell off some of the stuff to put some money into buying newer items for your house. You could decide to donate some or all of your unwanted stuff to charity. Do this at least a month before moving. If you continue to pack and find more things to give away, then you can schedule another pick up to your charity of choice.

This also works out great because you are able to start packing slowly. It is always wise to be packed up about two weeks before you move.

Create Moving Tasks

Packing cannot be done in a few days. You should start packing for a move even months in advance. This way, you can get things done slowly. Start with smaller tasks and build up to the main things as you get closer to the moving date.
